FADE IN:

EXT.  OUTDOOR BASEBALL STADIUM -- DAY

Detective BYRONE DEXTER stands at top of ramp. Fedora in hand. Listens to hefty soparno finish the National Anthem. Pull the fedora down on his head. Strides down ramp.

BYRONE'S VOICE
Well, it was over. That Fat Lady had sung.

Turns at end of ramp. Walks through exit gate.

BYRONE'S VOICE
It hadn't been my most brilliant case,
but then they never are. Hadn't
made my fortune.

EXT  OUTSIDE STADIUM -- DAY

Emerges from stadium's shadow. Shields his eyes.

BYRONE'S VOICE
Wally would say I'd done my duty.
Why does it seem like duty is a four
letter word?

Byrone stops to clean gum from his heel. Sighs.

BYRONE'S VOICE
Life goes on...

Crack of the bat. A cheer. Looks up at incoming home run ball. Ball hits him on head. Byrone crumbles to the ground.

FADE

People have gathered round. Bystander slyly pockets ball.

POV camera rises from Byrone's body.

BYRONE'S VOICE
What luck. Fresh gum, a stale left
arm, and a sucker bull's eye on me
big enough for that four-eyed lead
off man to see.

Bright light slowly envelopes Byrone. His voice starts to echo.

BYRONE'S VOICE
Life goes on... for some.
